Payroll Manager

Job Description

At National Church Residences, every role connects to one mission: enriching the lives of seniors and their families. With 360+ communities, we’re the nation’s largest not-for-profit provider of affordable senior housing and services. The nurses, aides, and maintenance teams who care for our residents count on one thing from us without fail: an accurate paycheck, on time. As Payroll Manager, you’ll own that promise. You’ll lead the payroll team, strengthen controls, and use Workday to make payroll simpler and more reliable as we grow.

The basics

  • Schedule: Full-time, hybrid, based in Dublin, OH
  • Reports to: VP HR Operations
  • Leads: A payroll team of 3

What you’ll do

  • Own payroll end to end. Lead regular, off-cycle, and special payrolls for a [multi-state], largely hourly workforce, including shift differentials, overtime, and Daily Pay.
  • Build a strong control environment. Set and test controls, reconciliations, and segregation of duties, keep up with wage, hour, and tax changes, and lead audit support.
  • Lead and develop the team. Set clear expectations, cross-train for depth, and build a team that doesn’t depend on any one person.
  • Make Workday work harder. Serve as the functional lead for payroll in Workday, partner with HR Technology on enhancements and testing, and automate manual work.
  • Partner with Finance. Own payroll accounting, GL integration, period-end reconciliation, and year-end tax reporting.
  • Fix problems at the source. Use error and inquiry trends to cut corrections and off-cycle payments, and improve how payroll connects with hiring, timekeeping, benefits, and leave.

What success looks like
Accurate, on-time payroll every cycle, fewer corrections and off-cycle payments, clean audits, and a team with the depth to handle anything.

What you need

  • 7+ years of progressive payroll experience, including leading complex payroll operations
  • 3+ years leading a payroll team
  • Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll, tax, and wage-and-hour requirements
  • Experience with payroll controls, reconciliation, audits, and an enterprise HRIS or payroll system
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent experience

Nice to have

  • Workday Payroll or Workday HCM experience
  • CPP certification
  • Multi-state payroll experience
  • Experience leading payroll automation or system implementations
  • Healthcare or high-volume hourly payroll experience
