Visiting Instructor- AZ- College of Veterinary Medicine

Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine offers a one-year Small Animal Rotating Internship beginning in June 2027. This is a full-time clinical appointment at the faculty rank of Visiting Instructor. The Intern will practice within the Companion Animal Clinic and rotate through Emergency and Critical Care, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Primary Care, and Anesthesia. The program is designed to strengthen clinical judgment, procedural skills, case management, communication, and readiness for advanced clinical practice or residency training.

Clinical Rotations and Responsibilities

The Intern will divide clinical time among the following core services:

• Emergency and Critical Care: Participate in triage, stabilization, diagnostic planning, inpatient management, emergency procedures, and continuity of care for urgent and critically ill patients.
• Internal Medicine: Evaluate and manage patients with complex medical conditions; develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans; interpret laboratory and imaging findings; and coordinate follow-up care.
• General Surgery: Participate in preoperative assessment, surgical case management, operative procedures appropriate to experience and supervision, postoperative care, and client communication.
• Primary Care: Provide preventive care, wellness services, routine diagnostics and treatment, outpatient procedures, and longitudinal case management.
• Anesthesia: Develop and implement individualized anesthetic and analgesic plans; assist with induction, monitoring, recovery, pain management, and perioperative risk assessment.

Across all rotations, the Intern will maintain accurate and timely medical records, communicate effectively with clients and referring veterinarians, collaborate with faculty and the clinical care team, participate in rounds and educational activities, and contribute to the clinical education of veterinary students. Scheduling will include evening and overnight Emergency and Critical Care rotations, with evaluation of new emergency patients extending until midnight and overnight responsibilities focused on hospitalized ICU patients. Rotating Interns will also participate in a shared weekend call rotation for cases hospitalized in the ICU. The program is structured with the goal of providing each Intern with two days off per week. The Companion Animal Clinic is closed on major holidays and during the final two weeks of December for Winter Break.

Clinical Environment

The Companion Animal Clinic is a modern, innovative small animal teaching hospital. The 111,000-square-foot facility includes advanced surgical, dental, emergency, intensive care, and diagnostic capabilities. Equipment includes digital radiography, fluoroscopy, C-arm, computed tomography, ultrasound, endoscopy, laparoscopy, and arthroscopy. The hospital also offers rehabilitation services, an onsite pharmacy, a full-service clinical pathology laboratory, a well-equipped surgery teaching laboratory, simulated examination rooms for clinical communication training, and ample conference and small-group learning spaces. Adjacent facilities include the Equine and Bovine Center and the Diagnostic Pathology Center, a full-service pathology facility providing postmortem examinations and biopsy services.

Required Qualifications

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree or equivalent from an accredited institution
• Eligibility for and ability to obtain veterinary licensure in Arizona prior to the start of the internship
• Strong clinical communication and interpersonal skills
• Commitment to high-quality, compassionate, patient-centered care
• Ability to collaborate effectively in a teaching-hospital environment
• Commitment to professional growth, evidence-based medicine, and the education of veterinary students
