The Central Valley Regional Water Quality Control Board (Central Valley Water Board) has an opening for a Senior Engineering Geologist (Supervisory) to manage the Site Cleanup Program and Underground Storage Tank Program at its Redding office. The individual coming into this position will use geologic knowledge and technical expertise to manage cleanup projects and help restore water quality and ensure protection of human health. The position is located at 364 Knollcrest Drive, Suite 205, Redding, CA 96002, overlooking the beautiful Sacramento River. It is an outdoor paradise surrounded by the Trinity Alps to the west and Cascade Range to the north and east. Mt. Shasta, Lassen Park, abundant lakes, streams, and rivers are just a short distance away. Duties: 

The Senior Engineering Geologist (Supervisory) will supervise the Central Valley Water Board’s Groundwater Unit in the Region’s Redding office. The Groundwater Unit is responsible for compliance, permitting and enforcement related to the Underground Storage Tank Program and the Site Cleanup Program in the Central Valley Region. Work in the unit consists of complex planning, hydrogeologic studies, investigations, report reviews, cleanup activities and technical support. 

The Senior Engineering Geologist (Supervisory) will work closely with the Site Cleanup Regional Board program manager, the Underground Storage Tank Regional Board program manager, Executive Management, and legal staff to interpret Federal and State regulations and policies, and Basin Plan objectives for implementation in permits and certifications. The incumbent will use project management tools to assist staff with maintaining project milestone schedules, coordinating work tasks with federal, State, and local agencies, stakeholders, and staff.

Working Conditions

Positions at the Water Boards may be eligible for telework with in-person attendance based on the operational needs of the position and might be expected to comply with Executive Order (EO) 22-25 after July 1, 2026.

In accordance with the Statewide Telework Policy and GC 14200, the successful candidate must reside in California upon appointment.  Proof of residency may be required.

Salary Information - CalHR salary rules allow appointment at the entrance rate (Cal. Code Regs., tit. 2, § 599.673) of a classification. For classes with alternate ranges, placement is based on education/experience. Employees appointed to the Attorney or Water Resource Control Engineer classification will receive Recruitment Higher Above Minimum (HAM) rate in accordance with the approved Civil Service Pay Scales.

In addition, note: Effective July 1, 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) which reduces an employee’s monthly salary in exchange for leave credits. Employees appointed to this classification will have their monthly salary reduced and will accrue hours of PLP 2025 on the first day of each pay period in accordance with the applicable bargaining contract. The salary range(s) included on this job posting do not reflect the reduction in pay.
