Assistant Professor, Pre-Clinical - College of Dental Medicine - IL

Job Description

The Assistant Professor - Preclinical faculty must have earned a DDS/DMD degree or equivalent. A minimum of 3 years of experience in general dentistry. The completion of a post-doctoral General Dentist Residency or training preferred. It is preferred that the candidate has a minimal level of teaching experience at an academic institution and/or health center. The candidate should have clinical experience in the use of CAD/CAM, laser, and emerging technologies in dentistry. The candidate should be a person committed to educating and empowering students with a wide range of clinical and academic abilities.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Preclinical Education, the Assistant Professor Preclinical faculty will:

  1. Work directly with students in the simulation clinic and on scheduled times at the clinic, supervising the development of hand skills in all areas of general dentistry.
  2. Interact positively with students, treating all students as future colleagues.
  3. Be competent in instructing students and demonstrating procedures on the manikins in Sim and on student patients in the clinic at scheduled times in all areas of general dentistry.
  4. Be a positive role model for students in professionalism. 
  5. Adhere to CDMI protocols, guidelines, calibrations, and policies in the delivery of dental care in the CDMI Dental Institute.
  6. Have clinical experience in the use of current technologies including rotary endodontics, CAD/CAM, and lasers.
  7. Be willing to learn new and emerging technologies in dentistry including rotary endodontics, CAD/CAM dentistry, 3D Printing, and lasers following CDMI clinical protocols and calibrations.
  8. Proactively engage and mentor pre-doctoral students in all areas of dentistry, including the active use of evidence-based technologies.
  9. Be an example of an active life-long learner in dentistry, through learning new techniques, materials and treatment protocols as needed by the college.
  10. Adopt different teaching techniques and styles to meet the needs of individual students.
  11. Serve on assigned committees within the college and/or university.
  12. Interact professionally with all faculty and staff, treating all faculty and staff with respect and collegiality.
  13. Develop and deliver teaching materials in analog and digital formats including PowerPoints and video instructions to the students in lecture and demonstrate in SIM clinic demo-along formats in all disciplines of general dentistry as requested by the Associate Dean for Preclinical Education following CDMI protocols, guidelines, calibrations, and policies for lecture delivery.
  14. Create teaching instruction and facilitate student rotation groups in all phases and specialties in dentistry.
  15. Take courses in education as needed, which should include skills for delivering lectures, as well as skills in developing examinations/assessments.
  16. Be competent in the use of the college’s patient digital record keeping system, being able to demonstrate in the simulation clinic use of the Electronic Health Record.
  17. Be a course director or co-director as assigned by the Associate Dean for Preclinical Education.
  18. Evaluate students in a timely manner (daily, quarterly, or weekly) as required by the college.
  19. Demonstrate collaborative relationships with dental specialists to model exemplary patient- centered care for students.
  20. Be a positive influence on the MWU CDMI program.
  21. Be willing to mentor students in small groups as requested by the college.
  22. Be willing to work collaboratively as a member of the faculty team, supporting faculty calibration and adherence to college protocols, curriculum, and teaching standards.
  23. Commit to other responsibilities as needed, at the request of the Associate Dean for Preclinical Education.

  • The Assistant Professor - Preclinical faculty position involves being in the dental simulation clinic when students are in session and walking between the students without disturbing They will actively circulate through the assigned bench during operating hours to evaluate, provide feedback, and grade procedures performed by students.
  • The ability of the faculty to sit or stand chairside and demonstrate procedures for students on a simulator at the dental simulation clinic using dental instruments, handpieces with specific burs/files for each specialized procedure.
  • The ability of the faculty to communicate, listen and follow along to any communications occurring during students’ learning.
  • Must be capable of tolerating the lights and noises associated with the dental simulation clinic.
  • Must be capable of lifting and /or moving up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifting and/or moving up to 25 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities include close and distance vision with and without magnification loupes and illumination, including looking at a computer monitor for extended periods of time.
